Photoelectric sensors / Fiber optic sensors

Fiber optic photoelectric sensors for glass fibers

Baumer electric glass fiber optics are made of the finest high quality 70 micron glass fibers which are bundled in PVC, PUR or metal sheaths, as well as in chrome-nickel tubes. The front surfaces of the fibers, which are set and glued into the sensing head, are precisely ground and polished to provide outstanding optics.

Even difficult multiple sensing problems can be solved by using fiber optics.

Some examples:
Miniature sensing heads allow use in confined areas.
Metal sheathed cables can withstand temperatures up to 250 ¡C.
Optical fibers are intrinsically safe, since only light is transmitted. There is no danger of sparks to cause an explosion in hazardous areas.
Fiber optics can be used to sense very tiny objects, as small as 0,1 mm.
Fiber optic sensing is totally immune to both EMI and RFI, and can be used in intensive electromagnetic fields.

There are two types of fibers:
Reflective types
Fiber optic cables may be applied using the same guidelines as diffuse sensors.
Through beam types
Fiber optic cables may be applied using the same guidelines as through beam sensors.

Flare type fiber optic unit

Flare type fiber optics consist of an emitter and receiver. The fibers are bundled and flared to form a line. If an object passes through the "light curtain", the received signal strength is proportional to the surface area of the light curtain that has been blocked. The measurement is independent of color, form or surface properties of the target. The same object may not give exactly the same output at different positions within the beam area. This is the result of the asymmetrical arrangement of the fibers which leads to a non linear, but repeatable, component to the output signal.

Plastic fiber optics are less expensive than glass and can be cut to the desired length by the user. Excess cable length is no longer a problem. New to the program are extendible coiled fiber optic cables and various, sophisticated sensing head versions plus assorted accessories.

Kinds of Plastic fiber optic sensors:

Double fiber optic sensors:
For the first time, the new double fiber optic sensor contains two complete sensors in one housing. The perfect solution if reduced costs, less mounting labor, small space requirements and maximum functionality are what you need. This new generation leaves nothing to be desired as far as operation and function are concerned. When you have locked the fiber optics with a small lever, the two channels can be programmed very simply with the SET key. The outputs are logically linkable, if required, and the sensor also has a common alarm output. You therefore only need one input on your controller!

Single fiber optic sensors:
Small but great performance - the new single fiber optic sensor is just 12 mm wide and can be mounted in an extremely compact way on DIN rails. It is just as good as its big brother as far as operating comfort and functionality are concerned. The output indicator and the soiled lens indicator are easily visible through the transparent plastic cover which protects against unwanted manipulation.
