Accurate detection with laser beams
Accurate detection is very important
in today's industrial applications, but not every solution can justify the cost
of laser distance meters, which measure along the beams axis. Now there is a
whole family of low cost compact laser sensors designed to detect objects as
they move laterally into the beam, giving unparalleled levels of accuracy.
Sensor principles
Whole families of commercially available photo
electric sensors can now be fitted with laser light sources. All sensor
principles from diffuse sensor with background suppression up to through beam
sensors are available in almost all housing sizes from Baumer electric. Unique
new generation levels of miniaturisation have been achieved by combining the
latest laser diode technologies with high density electronics, resulting in the
smallest member of the laser family being no bigger than a sugar cube.
Small, visible laser spot
All sensors have a visible laser spot, which is
extremely small at the focal point. This gives an excellent lateral turn on
accuracy. Even the tiniest of objects, e.g. a single ---hair, are detected
perfectly at this distance. The good visibility of the laser also makes it easy
to align the sensor to the target.
Areas of application
The laser sensor family has a wide range of applications.
From drill point control, thread detection and location checking to accurate
edge detection and the replacement of fibre optics in difficult applications.
